Flying Sardines
Friday night, looking for a nice but inexpensive restaurant, we decide to stop our choice on Le Super Qualité. Le Super Qualité is an Indian restaurant in Montréal that has been on our “to do list” for some time. During a stop between rain showers, Montreal summer 2017 being what it is, we set off for a short walk of about twenty minutes. Just before arriving at the restaurant, the rain resumed its pace and we start to be a little soaked, despite the mini-umbrella Karine is struggling with to keep open because of the wind.
From a distance, we can see the clients sitting on the small terrace, rushing inside the equally small room of just 18 seats (10 at the counter and four tables) but well laid out and decorated. We had just seen our waiting time increase significantly. But seeing the plates before our eyes, it was decided that this expectation would be quite justified.
Once inside, we join a small group of people waiting at the entrance to get a table. The welcome is warm and friendly. The owner ask: Your name ? I replied: Pierre. He writes Yan on the waiting list. So I will be Yan for this evening. We are offered to order a drink to wait. Of course! A very nice selection of local beers and some cocktails are featured. Go for excellent French pilsner, the Avant-Garde Jet Set.
The Story Behind Le Super Qualité:
Le Super Qualité – Snack Bar Indien is the creation of three fellow travelers. Jennifer & Guillaume are already at the bar of a catering service named Cook Caravan. During a trip to Asia, they meet Étienne and began the adventure of Le Super Quality – Snack Bar Indien. The name of the snack bar, satirically selected with reference to marketing techniques commonly used in parts of India to attract customers, where so many stores and restaurants are given the qualificative of SUPER.
What does it taste like?
Le Super Qualité is an indian restaurant that oozes the southern India flavors, inspired by grandmother’s recipes. Moreover, Étienne will return in this part of the world to take kitchens courses with these same grandmothers. The menu features dishes such as Thali, sets of small plates set on a large tray including a generous portion of rice, sauces and soups, lentils and 2 papadums. Perfect for sharing. Also, Dahi Batata Puri, small crispy cracker with potatoes and chickpeas, the Masala Dosa, a typical southern India dish, sublime pancake stuffed with potatoes, brown mustard, curry leaves and green chilies, along with sambar and chutney coconut (delicious) and, Dabeli, homemade stuffed bread “filled with an explosion of flavors and textures” as described on the menu … and that is very true!
Perfect for the adventurous who want to explore this tasteful and aromatic cuisine. At Le Super Quality, do not expect to see naan bread on your plate. Here we rather serve you Papadums, very thin crispy dough that perfectly accompanies the Thali.
Beautiful Decoration
It is far from dark and poorly decorated restaurant of Park Extension. The atmosphere, the music and the dedicated and friendly service makes the experience very enjoyable. As for the decor, is minimal but appropriate. The lamps are made with Dabbas, these stacked cans generally used as lunch boxes to serve Tiffins, light lunch served all over South Asia, the fans hanging from the green walls and the activity behind the counter and in the open kitchen gives you this feeling that you could somewhere else.. In the world.
To help save the planet, they also serve dishes to go, served in the same Dabbas that you bring back once done (with a $ 20 deposit, refundable) or, less environmentally friendly, in paper bags. (But as stated on their website, the staff will not judge you for that … but greenpeace will.)
As a first visit, it is very successful. We loved and have concluded that the next visit would be in the company of some friends, just to be able to taste everything. And as the addition is very easy to swallow, considering the quality of food … we promised to return very soon.
