Il Miglio was on our list of places to visit for lunch for a long time. I’m a fan of the Le Filet restaurant, my favorite in Montreal. When I heard that Claude Pelletier and Hubert Marsolais were opening a restaurant of fresh pasta in the Mile-End, I immediately wanted to try it. Finally, it took more than a year and a half before we went, Pierre and I, to taste the fresh pasta of this Italian Mile-End canteen! Il Miglio means The Thousand in Italian … little play on words here, considering the location of the restaurant …

The restaurant has joined the big family which includes the Club Chasse & Pêche, Le Serpent and Le Filet restaurants. The concept of Il Miglio is very different from his 3 big brothers. It’s open for lunch only, offers take-out food and does not serve at the tables. The challenge was to create something that contrasted with other partners’ restaurants. They rose to the challenge with flying colours and are now clearly among the best casual Italian addresses in Montreal.

The decor is minimalist and simple. It was designed by Hubert and Tom Balaban of T-B-A . The 25 seats are scattered on a long counter and around a large common table in the middle of the space. Small green plants, round white lights, I love it ! Fresh pasta is also sold on site as well as some products directly imported from Italy.

The concept is simple and it works very well. The daily menu consists of 4-5 choices of fresh pasta and 2 choices of baked dishes (lasagna, cannelloni, etc.). There are also antipastis that looked delicious. As in cafeterias, you take a cabaret and order the pasta, wait for the plate and pay. You can also accompany your lunch with a wonderful dessert made by the pastry chef Masami Waki, of the family restaurants, not to be missed. A glass of wine with that, no problem, they are served in a small glass like in Italy.

So we arrived around 13:30 on a Friday afternoon, the restaurant was not filled, perfect we will have room to sit. The choice is difficult, everything looks delicious … My eye catches the word truffle oil and here I was, I stopped my choice on mushrooms Campanelles, veal juice, truffle oil, it can only be wonderful. And it was to fall on the ground … o) For his part, Pierre took the Gemellis, peppers, capers, olives and goat cheese, just as delicious. The pasta plates are between $ 11-15 and the portions are very generous. We had ordered a minestrone to start and as it is cafeteria style, everything came together, even though the soup had been a little forgotten. It’s a little sad because our pasta was not very hot when it was time for it. The bread rolls that comes with the plates were beautiful and delightful, perfect for the scarpetta. Despite the small misstep of the forgotten soup, the service was very good. In fact the cook, was very nice and brought us our soups with cold water carafes at our table.

The Il Miglio restaurant is a perfect place for a small lunch. We highly recommend it and do not wait, like us, a year and a half before going to enjoy this Mile-End Italian cuisine.

Note: The restaurant is open from 11:30 to 15:00, from Monday to Friday.
