The Mission

INSPIRE: it’s a beautiful word! To live, the human being needs air. We inspire and this vital air penetrates our body, our brain, our blood and maintains life. But to inspire also means something much less tangible. Rather than being an action, it can also be an emotion.

For Flying Sardines, INSPIRING is our raison d’être. We want to inspire you to discover slow-travel and good food, through texts and photos. And all that without spending an arm and a leg.

You have been around… sort of speech, and you have come to an age where you want something else, something different. You may have already traveled, but did not find the adventure quite “exotic” enough ? Well, be aware that we are in our 40s and 50s and we are traveling in remote areas, on a very small budget, while maintaining a reasonable level of comfort. The backpacking of the twenties, we already gave. But how to achieve travel with a minimum of expenses? It takes a lot of work: many reacherses on the web, discussions with other travelers, trial and error … a lot of errors!

Being of Generation X and Baby Boomers, our hope is to inspire people of all ages. And that’s where we can help … by simplifying it for you.

So, follow us through our pages, through stories, tips & tricks and recommendations. We travel with backpacks and sandals, across Asia and the rest of the world. And if all that makes you want to go on an adventure, we will have achieved our mission.

Who We Are

Karine Bernèche

Ask Karine where in the world she would like to go next and she will invariably answer, “when do we leave?” A cheerful “bon-vivant” who is constantly ready to party and enjoy herself. She also takes the time to ensure her “footprint” on the environment is minimized and our planet is protected. Having worked for 14 years for a major airline in Canada, she has traveled extensively, as well have having the opportunity to work in other countries, namely in Aspen, Colorado, USA and Euro Disney, near Paris, France. Karine is responsible for our social-media communications, a role that suits her very well. She also has a good eye to capture unusual scenes and moments. She assist Pierre with photography responsibilities. Having traveled extensively, she also enjoyed working in Aspen, Colorado and at Euro Disney, near Paris.”

Pierre Bourbonnais

Pierre has always been a little rebellious of all things corporate and mainstream. His passion for the outdoors started very young when his father was taking him on a few fishing trips on the beautiful Brome Lake. Having worked in the airline industry as well, for a whopping 28 years… he has learned a lot through his travels around the globe. This is where he developed a thirst for photography and writing about what he sees and feels on his journeys. Extremely social, he particularly loves to share a good meal with friends and people he meets, especially if it involves a good bottle of Pinot Noir. The story says he his a good cook too. After a few life changing events, Pierre decided to co-found this project with Karine. Pierre handles the writing and photography.

Having both worked in the airline industry for quite some time and having traveled the world to no less than 35 countries on multiple continents, Karine & Pierre have developed a taste for Slow-Travel and Low-Gudget Travel, without compromising on the quality of their confort.

“Being extremely attracted by what is out there on our amazing planet, societies, panoramas, oceans, arts and food, we started exploring a significant number of countries in different part of the world and soon realized that we wished we could be doing this on a full-time basis.”

And why not share their knowledge and experience with others who, like them, want to travel without busting the budget and at their own pace (not in a guided group !)
